The present paper is concerned with the complex and heterogeneous virtue known as ḥilm, “judiciousness”. Our inquiry starts with the Koranic use of the root ḥlm, examines its ingredients through some relevant passages of early lexicography (particularly the work of Ibn Manẓūr), identifies its occurrences in the early Tradition-centred literature (the “Six Books”, Ibn Abī l-Dunyā’s Kitāb al-Ḥilm) and analyses these, particularly in the light of pertinent commentaries thereon (Ibn Ḥibbān’s and al-Mawardī’s, for example). Notwithstanding al-ḥalīm being listed among the Names of God, the literature consulted does not insist on the relation between man’s ḥilm and God’s, but rather on the wholly earthly aspects of judiciousness, which emerges as ...
